Hunting rig help

So, my hunting rig bit the dust this summer.  1997 Chevy silverado, bad breaks, water pump, rear diff, radiator and oil leaking.  My mech. says ~$2500-3000 to fix and be safe driving into back country.  My wife agreed (reluctantly) to let me use her Suby Forester for my up coming muzzy elk hunt.  My question is, will there be enough space to pack out an animal if successful?  I have two 150quart coolers already to go, and plenty of tarps to cover seats.  Is this enough room or should I break down and rent a truck for the weekend?

If you quarter the animal and get it on ice, it should be plenty of space.  Just don't try and strap it to the roof .

I agree, if you can fit two 150s in there you should be fine.  What you do with a 350" rack is another question altogether.

I got 5 point rosey in my wife's legacy. I think that is smaller than the forester.

Not a problem at all!  I debone all the my meat in the field and into bags it goes!!!  you will have room to spare if de-boned.  If you quarter it you still should be able to get it all in.  Just a hint, don't put bagged ice or straight ice on the meat were it can melt and get wet.  Get a bunch of gallon jugs or 2 liter pop bottles full of water and freeze them solid and take them with you in the ice chest.  If successful put meat in coolers and put the ice jugs on top of it (cold air drops).  This will cool your meat right down and not get it wet at all.  Just a thought to think about.  Works great for me here, Montana, and Wyoming.

The only time I was really happy not to be successful during elk season is the year I drove my Honda CRX.  I mean, my hunting gear and I hardly even fit in that little 2-seater.   Wasn't sure where an elk was going to ride.

I used to hunt in a little chevy chevette in high school all the time.  Just had to make it work...and be really careful not to get stuck!

I put a full body cow and three other guys in my Suzuki samurai. Luckily, we only had to go a few miles. There was guys and cow legs sticking out the back and sides!

Late 1970,s I saw the tips of antlers in the back seat of a Honda civic while gassing up over east during deer season. I peaked over to see and there was a blue tarp covering a "pile" of something with antlers? The hunters were inside the station, they came out and walked towards the car dressed in "huntin garb", Filson, Carharts, Stormy cromers etc.(not a lot of camo back then) .I asked them what was under the tarp in their back seat, they said do you want to see, I said yes, THE TWO 18YEAR OLD GIRLS (one was home coming queen from that year and the other would be leaving for the U. of Hawaii to play volley ball) pulled the tarp back and under was the heads of two dandy mule deer bucks . Both 4 by 4,s, one 27" and the other 28. The girls had graduated that year from a highschool on the west side and the parents of one of the girls had got her and a friend a guided hunt somewhere around Tonasket with an outfitter for a graduation present! They shot both deer on the same day, the bucks were both bedded under a rock bluff about 10 yards apart, used the "shoot on 3" method and killed them both in their beds .....Oh the good old days
